390 kids participate in Playa del Carmen’s Exchange Toy Gun program

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The weekly exchange your toy gun for a new toy program has seen nearly 400 kids line up to trade in plastic weapons in exchange for educational toys.

The General Directorate of Public Safety held 14 days of the “Exchange Your Toy Gun for a New Toy” program, noting that this time, more than 390 children exchanged a replica weapon for a traditional game or sport to teach them about violent behavior and to encourage healthy family recreation.

The program is held each week in a different community of Solidaridad where police officers are on site to help kids exchange their guns for a healthier toy choice. The program is put on by the Directorate of Citizen Participation and Prevention of Public Security with the participation of the Neighborhood Police Committees, the business sector and the general public.

In a statement, Solidaridad City Council explained that this campaign contributes to eradicating patterns of antisocial behavior, while promoting healthy recreation and positive progress in children’s skills. The program helps ensure they have adequate development and realize that violence is not a game.

The program is also sponsored by various sectors of the city including councilors, businessmen, hotels, civil associations and directors of the police corporation who have joined in promoting this activity of healthy living by donating healthy toys.
