Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Work is currently underway to update the Federal Maritime Land Zone (Zofemat) regulations to include a pet friendly beach. Adrián Medina, the Solidaridad Director of Zofemat, said the update is part of the handover process to the new incoming administration of Solidaridad.
He says the updated Zofemat (Zona Federal Marítimo Terrestre) regulations are being made to provide greater clarity on the management of Playa 72 after recently being approved as the first pet friendly beach in Playa del Carmen.
The new regulations seek to regulate the coexistence between beachgoers and those who bring their pets to the beaches. According to the Director, although Playa 72 has been designated as an area for animals, some bathers have expressed discomfort due to the presence of pets on beaches outside the permitted area.
“The updated regulations will allow these complaints to be formalized before the authorities, providing a clear framework for coexistence and respect in the different beach areas according to their designations,” he explained.

With clarification, a more efficient and orderly management of the beaches of Playa del Carmen is expected since they have obtained recognition at an international level.
According to Medina, the Zofemat update will include other key issues such as Blue Flag and Platinum certified beaches to ensure an orderly transition.
