Witnesses say woman shot in central Playa del Carmen followed by two men

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — On Wednesday night, a woman was shot while walking down Playa del Carmen’s popular Fifth Avenue. Police responded to the 8:30 p.m. reports of gunfire and an injured woman at the intersection of Calle 2 and Avenida Quinta.

Witnesses told police two men were following her. When she reached the intersection, one ran in front and shot her before both fled. She was left bleeding, laying in the street. The woman was transferred to the General Hospital in a private vehicle.

She was reported in serious condition. Police cordoned off the scene to collect evidence.

According to Infoqroo, during the administration of Laura Beristain Navarrete when Jorge Robles Aguilar was head of Public Security for Playa del Carmen, the municipality closed with 416 shootings, the highest in history.

Last week, state prosecutor Oscar Montes de Oca said that the null participation of the municipal police in Playa del Carmen has opened spaces of impunity and generated an alarming growth in illegal activities along Fifth Avenue.

During the last month of the Navarrete administration, Montes de Oca said coordinated operations were being made in the center of the city, operations that did not include Playa del Carmen municipal police.
