Two restaurant branches in Cancun and Playa del Carmen shot at simultaneously

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Two seafood restaurants of the same chain were shot at at the same time Sunday. One was located in Cancun and the other in Playa del Carmen. One person was injured in the Cancun shooting. Two men were arrested.

There were no injuries or arrests reported in the shooting at the Playa del Carmen location. Both shootings took place simultaneously around 4:00 p.m. It is the third time this year the same restaurant has been fired upon.

On Sunday, armed men entered the Cancun seafood restaurant where they opened fire. One woman, a patron, was injured. She was taken to an IMSS hospital in Cancun where she continues to be treated for a bullet wound to her right leg.

Cancun Police were successful in arresting two male suspects from the area after the shooting even though they fled. Neither of the men have been identified by name. Four shell casings were lifted from the scene.

While the Cancun location was under fire, the restaurant’s Playa del Carmen location was also shot at. Reports say two armed men fired shots into the air outside the Playa del Carmen location before escaping.

Shell casings were also lifted from the 10th Avenue and 5 Street Sur location. The two gunmen are reported to have fled on a motorcycle. A search operation did not locate the male suspects.

In a news briefing regarding the two shootings, Cancun Police reported “In relation to the events that occurred in two branches of an establishment: one located in the municipality of Benito Juárez and the other in Solidaridad, the State Attorney General’s Office reports the following:

“After the events, two investigations were initiated, one in the municipality of Benito Juárez and another in Solidaridad. In Benito Juárez, one person was reported injured by a firearm projectile, not seriously, and two detainees were detained by the Municipal Police.

“In Solidaridad, the report is without injuries. The FGE reiterates its commitment to combat organized crime with the different security corporations of the State and the Federal Forces, to guarantee peace and justice in Quintana Roo.”

It is the third time that same restaurant has been shot at this year. The last event happened in August when a nighttime security guard was shot. The ongoing targeted attacks are believed extortion related.
