Tourist training provided to customs agents inside Cancun International

Cancun, Q.R. — Nearly 100 customs agents inside the Cancun International Airport have received tourist training. The training came months after the The Mexican Association of Incoming Tourism Agencies (Amatur) provided tourist training to airport immigration officers.

The group of 90 customs agents were trained during the last days of January in a three day course. The course was presented after the National Customs Agency of Mexico finally agreed to it after a change of “vision.”

Sergio González Rubiera, President of Asociación Mexicana de Agencias de Turismo Receptivo (Amatur) national insisted on the need to train airport staff who, he pointed out, have the first contact with tourists arriving at the Cancun airport.

After years of complaints of long lines and poor service, Amatur was able to train National Migration Institute (INM) airport officers last year. During that training session, customs agents were supposed to be included, however, the head of the division declined.

González Rubiera reported that in the New Year, they changed their minds and decided to train the customs agents who work at the Cancun International Airport.

“Customs confirmed that I will be giving the course,” he said in mid-January. According to González Rubiera, 90 customs officers were trained last month for the first time in the country.

“It seems that someone with a new vision arrived,” he said. The Cancun airport customs agents were trained on “Quality in Tourist Service”, the same course that was given last year to 30 National Migration Institute (INM) officers who work at the Cancun International Airport.

The airport tourist training focused on topics such as emotional management, customer service and quality systematization to ensure a more satisfactory experience for travelers.

He said the purpose was for staff to provide better service to tourists arriving at Cancun airport. He also said it is important that each agency maintain training since there is a constant rotation of airport personnel.
