Three jailed for setting CFE truck on fire during power outage protest

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Three men were arrested Wednesday night after setting a CFE truck on fire. A large group of residents in Villas del Sol had blocked a street in protest of a power failure that lasted more than 16 hours.

Police were at the scene around 10:30 p.m. after Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) personnel arrived in a service vehicle to make the repairs. While they were working to restore neighborhood electricity, the men set the truck ablaze.

Arrested was 35-year-old Cecilio “N” from Chiapas, who allegedly set fire to the truck. He was taken into custody along with 41-year-old Juan Carlos “N” from Veracruz and 21-year-old Ángel Joaquín “N” from Michoacán.

Police were on scene after some residents began throwing stones at the CFE service truck mixed with encouragement to attack the workers. Police were called in to keep the peace and protect the workers while repairs were made.
