Ongoing CFE failures leave areas of Riviera Maya in the dark

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — A large group of residents in Playa del Carmen blocked a busy intersection Wednesday night after another power failure. Residents in Villas del Sol prevented passage to traffic along Azulejos Avenue at the intersection of Rayadores and Carpintero Streets after 16 hours without electricity.

Power was reported out in several stages of the western neighborhood around 5:00 a.m. Wednesday. Despite reports to CFE, residents were still without electricity Wednesday night.

It was around 9:00 p.m. when angry resident took drastic measures by blocking the busy intersection. Residents, who saw Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) workers in the area, formed a large group to block the road until the CFE restored their power.

Police were on site during the road block since the CFE employees were unable to provide an estimated time for service restoration.

On Wednesday night, a large section of central Tulum was also left without power. Residents and businesses along Sol Oriente Street in downtown Tulum suddenly found themselves in the dark after a fire.

A transformer located on the sidewalk of a tenement house along Beta Sur Street began to spark and spew black smoke before catching fire. The exploding transformer was among several private vehicles whose owners quickly arrived to move their parked cars.

Tulum firemen arrived to extinguish the fire, however, power was not immediately restored. Civil Protection cordoned off the area.
