Swimmer drowns after being swept out to sea off central Playa del Carmen beach

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Public Security closed a section of a central Playa del Carmen beach Sunday after one swimmer drowned. The man was pulled from the water near the central ferry terminal around 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening.

According to initial reports, the man was swimming near the Fundadores beach area when he was swept out to sea. Other people on the beach saw the man in trouble and alerted authorities.

Despite the intervention of Civil Protection emergency services, the man was pronounced dead. The deceased is believed to be a local resident, however, police have not made his identity public. Since the male swimmer died, forensic medical personnel were called in to remove the body from the beach.

On Sunday morning, State Civil Protection released a weather warning regarding the continued strong winds, urging boaters to check with Port Authorities regarding allowed navigation activities and for swimmers to heed the advise of lifeguards.
