Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The Secretaría de Seguridad Pública (SSP) of Quintana Roo has made a statement regarding the mass arrests of alleged criminal gang members in Playa del Carmen.
In their statement, the agency reported members of the Coordination Group for the Construction of Peace and Security arrested a total of 26 people and seized 18 firearms, tactical equipment and 252 bags of various narcotics in the Selvanova subdivision.
The arrests and seizures were made after a citizen 911 complaint was received regarding several armed subjects. “During the afternoon of July 21, a search operation was carried out, managing to locate a Chevrolet brand truck, type Suburban in the private Coto 3, where upon noticing the police presence, 6 individuals carrying firearms left the vehicle and fled in different directions, but were hit by the elements,” the agency reported.
The SSP also detailed that “in the pool area of the subdivision there were several people who also underwent a security review in the face of the aforementioned report, finding firearms and narcotics and with the support of the Canine Unit, the inspection of the vehicle.”
As a result, a total of 26 men and women that ranged in ages from 18 to 54 were arrested for their probable participation in drug related crimes, criminal association and violation of the federal law on firearms and explosives.
