Costa Maya, Q.R. — Authorities report that the forest fire in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve from last week has been extinguished. According to information provided, the fire was registered by the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP) via satellite on August 26.
In a statement, Efraín Villanueva Arcos, Secretaría de Ecología y Medio Ambiente (SEMA), explained that during a flight carried out Friday, the forest fire Sabana Santa Teresa was determined to be completely inactive, adding that the area is being kept under surveillance.
He said that recent rains contributed to the dousing of the fire that consumed 1,800 hectares of reserve land.
