Protestors demonstrate at Playa del Carmen Tren Maya station on inauguration day

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A group of environmentalists were at the opening of the Playa del Carmen Tren Maya station Thursday. The group arrived with banners, some of which read “It is not Development It is Dispossession” and “Without Cenotes There is No Paradise”.

The group have been protesting the construction of the government train project since it began early two years ago. Environmentalists have been documenting the destruction of the ecosystem including forest devastation, damage to cenotes, underground caves and possible water contamination.

A large group of protesters gathered outside the Playa del Carmen train station Thursday morning during the scheduling of the inauguration of section 5 north of the project which runs from Cancun to Playa del Carmen.

Last month, some members of the same group were responsible for the successful suspension of section 5 south that runs from Playa del Carmen to Tulum. A Merida judge ruled in their favor to halt construction after videos emerged of the underground destruction.

After the judicial ruling, President Lopez Obrador said that the work would not stop and that “the necessary studies were carried out”.
