Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The city’s popular Fifth Avenue is being cleared of street vendors, as previously announced by mayor Lili Campos. In the face of high-season, last week, Campos began the removal of illegal vendors and the relocation of the legal stalls.
Approximately 130 vendors in total have been removed from the already full shopping street. Those with city permits were relocated to nearby areas where there is proper room and lighting for their installation.
An average of 30 vendor stalls each day have been removed from Fifth Avenue and relocated along 14th,16th and 34th Streets north. The long-waited move was made after years of complaints from both businessmen and pedestrians, who were often hassled by the vendors.
