Playa del Carmen police officer shot while on his way to work

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A member of the Playa del Carmen Tourist Police was hit by bullets Friday morning outside his home. The shooting was relayed to authorities by neighbors around 8:00 a.m.

The officer, who was traveling on Ibis Street in Villas del Sol, was hit in the targeted attack while on his scooter. The man had just left his home and was on his way to work when the shooting happened.

The unidentified officer was transferred to hospital in a patrol unit of other officers who responded to the report. He was admitted to the General Hospital where he remains in stable condition.

This attack occurs less than two weeks after another Tourist Police officer was shot in Playa del Carmen. On April 11, two on duty officers were assaulted in the city’s center. One of them was shot during that attack. He was taken to hospital for treatment and later released.

Officials reported the attack was in retaliation to recent drug busts. Officials in Playa del Carmen have not said if this latest shooting was also a form of retaliation.
