Playa del Carmen officer shot in retaliation for recent drug seizure operation

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A Playa del Carmen police officer who was shot while on duty Monday, has been released from hospital. The unidentified officer was shot around 1:20 a.m. Monday morning while foot patrolling 12th Avenue.

The officer was intercepted by a lone male who shot him then fled. Other nearby officers came to his aid, rushing him to hospital with a leg injury.

A second group of officers began a search operation for the shooter from 8th Street to Constituyentes Avenue. Officers also checked bars during their search, but were not successful in locating him.

Through a statement later in the day Monday, the Ministry of Public Safety and Transit of Playa del Carmen reported that the agent had been discharged. The agency also said that the shooting was a targeted attack against the officer who participated in an operation against organized crime that resulted in drug seizures.
