Playa del Carmen environmentalists protest continued construction of section 5 south

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Dozens of environmentalists intermittently closed both lanes of the federal highway in Playa del Carmen Friday. The closures were due to the government’s failed response to a judicial ruling to stop Maya Train work on section 5 south.

During the morning road block, the environmental groups invited President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and other Tren Maya officials to see the destruction for themselves. With bullhorns and banners, environmentalists reiterated the damage being done to the caves, cenotes and underground water systems from the Tren Maya construction.

During their federal highway protest, they warned of new protests to denounce the destruction since the government has failed to abide by the February judicial suspension to stop work on section 5 south.

The public Playa del Carmen protest was held on International Water Day. The group began their protest around 8:00 a.m. on a northern section of the federal highway. Cars were allowed to pass every 10 minutes.
