Passenger van sucked into left over natural gas line rut

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A Playa Express passenger van became the latest victim to the massive ruts left in city streets after the installation of natural gas lines. The van was traveling on the inside lane of Playa del Carmen Boulevard when it suddenly sunk.

Due to the heavy rains Monday, the driver was not able to see the rut nor its depth. Both diver’s side tires became lodged in the water-filled rut, disabling the combi from moving.

Elements of the traffic police arrived to move other vehicles along while they waited for a tow truck to pull the van free. There were no passengers in the van at the time of the incident.

Playa del Carmen city streets remain heavily damaged after the installation of the natural gas lines. The company responsible for the lines was granted their permits during the previous administration.

However, in December, mayor Lili Campos canceled the permits granted to Gas Natural del Noroeste SA de CV after they failed to properly repave the broken roads, which was part of the initial agreement.
