Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — One person has been reported killed and more than a dozen injured after a two vehicle crash early Sunday morning. The crash happened along a section of the federal highway approximately 20 kilometers north of Playa del Carmen when an SUV allegedly slammed into the back of a hotel staff vehicle.
The staff vehicle, a company van, was carrying 17 Riviera Maya hotel employees plus the driver at the time of the accident. One woman from the staff van was killed. The remaining 16 employees plus the driver were injured. Three of the 17 injured were serious.
According to available information, the driver of the SUV hit the van at a high rate of speed causing it to overturn. The van was located on its side in highway shoulder vegetation.
The driver of the SUV was also seriously hurt. His vehicle was left completely destroyed in the front end after the high-speed highway rear end.
The accident happened around 5:40 a.m. Sunday between Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos. National Guard and Solidaridad firemen were at the scene along with ambulances. The injured were taken to various Playa del Carmen hospitals.
Highway traffic was slowed considerably due to the response of emergency vehicles. An official cause for the fatal early morning crash is not yet known.
The Sunday morning accident occurred in the same area as a single vehicle accident two days earlier that left a female driver in serious condition.
