Mexico, Belize authorities on high alert for escaped prisoners

Chetumal, Q.R. — The towns of Botes, José Narciso Rovirosa and La Unión along the Rio Hondo remain on high alert with the announced escape of Belize inmates. To date, only three of the escapees have been recaptured, with one reportedly being killed in the process.

The Undersecretary of Public Security in Quintana Roo, Jorge Alejandro Ocampo Galindo, announced that they continue to maintain coordination between police elements to reinforce the routes in those areas in order to avoid the illegal crossing of any person.

“We remain alert in what is the border area with the neighboring country in coordination with the Belizean authorities and of course, the coordination between the public security agencies here in Chetumal,” he explained. He said that as of noon Tuesday, there were no reports of any detained fugitive from justice on the Mexican side.

Earlier this week, Belize authorities released the news of 20 inmates who escaped from the prison in Hattieville. They reported that they are considered dangerous since a majority were serving time for murders.
