Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) reports the ongoing investigation into the broad daylight murder of a local English businessman. On March 12, the man was shot dead by subjects on a motorcycle through his open driver’s side window at a busy highway intersection.
The same day as the shooting, the FGE announced the arrest of two males identified as 18-year-old Lenin N and 30-year-old José N, saying they also recovered the weapon used. The gun was found in a green area after being tossed.
The now-deceased has been identified as 54-year-old Chris Cleave from Cornall, England. Cleave was a real estate agent in Playa del Carmen.
According to State Prosecutor, Óscar Montes de Oca Rosales, he was a permanent resident of Playa del Carmen since 2013.
Montes de Oca Rosales credited the “timely intervention of the municipal police and their rapid response” which he says, lead to the arrest of those responsible. He also said that “expert reports have already been carried out and they (the two arrested) are the ones who participated in the event.”
The prosecutor also said that in the past, Cleave had been threatened by area drug dealers, noting that his business partner was also executed exactly one year ago. Cleave’s 14-year-old daughter, who was with him at the time of the shooting, was briefly hospitalized for shock and minor injuries and is currently living with relatives.
