Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — UPDATED: A man leaving the Xcalacoco area of Playa del Carmen was shot dead Saturday. The broad daylight shooting happened late Saturday morning as the man was turning onto the federal highway from Avenue Xcalacoco.
Preliminary reports say the driver of the red convertible Audi was intercepted by two armed subjects in the intersection who shot him through his open driver’s side window. The man was hit in the head.
Police were called to the scene of the shooting at the busy intersection of Avenue Xcalacoco and the federal 307 highway. There, they located the deceased driver of the car in the front seat. In the vehicle with him was his minor daughter. She was transferred to hospital with undisclosed minor injuries.
In a news brief, the FGE confirmed the deadly shooting, saying that the now-deceased was a permanent resident since 2013. His name has not been released. Two arrests were made after the shooting.
In a briefing, the FGE reported “a homicide by firearm was recorded on the Cancun-Playa del Carmen and Av. Xcalacoco federal highway in the municipality of Solidaridad.
“The victim is a male of foreign origin with permanent resident immigration status since 2013. There are two detainees and the firearm used was seized. A minor person presented minor injuries but is out of danger.”
No other details have been released.
UPDATE: — Local authorities have yet to provide official details regarding the shooting, including the nationality of the man shot. While local media reported the man was a Canadian, it has since transpired that he may have been from England.
Area residents who claimed to know the now-deceased man said he was from Canada, however, that has not been confirmed or denied by local authorities.
