Holbox, Q.R. — A smoldering palapa fire was put out by island firemen Wednesday at a Holbox business. Holbox Mayor Jafet Silvarán Escamilla expressed his gratitude for the timely intervention of Civil Protection and Firefighters in extinguishing the fire.
According to Silvarán Escamilla, Civil Protection personnel coordinated with staff, who demonstrated their willingness and commitment in controlling the emergency before it caused material losses.
José Gaspar Cauich Iuit, Fire Coordinator for the Lázaro Cárdenas City Council, highlighted the support provided by the staff. He said they demonstrated the value of community unity and shared responsibility for keeping Holbox Island safer.
He said the prompt and effective intervention in controlling the fire was fast and prevented it from spreading and causing additional damage. Silvarán Escamilla said according to reports, the palapa fire was started by an electrical failure.

In June, a Holbox restaurant fire quickly spread due to strong winds and became a multi-block fire that left nine properties damaged.
