Forest fire fighters continue to battle 80 hectare Bacalar blaze

Bacalar, Q.R. — Forest fire fighters are still working on battling the state’s first fire of the year. The fire, located southwest of Bacalar, was located on the evening of March 3, however, due to the lack of light, efforts were postponed until the following day.

Fire brigades began their journey to the fire on March 4, which was reported as being difficult due to the isolated location and thick brush.

However, over the past several days, authorities report making progress with 90 percent control. The 72 fire fighters sent to battle the fire will stay until the 80-hectare blazed named Ichkabal, is completely extinguished.

The State Center for Fire Management of the state of Quintana Roo says the fire is approximately 15 kilometers from the town of El Suspiro in the municipality of Bacalar. Of the fire fighters sent to the area, 22 are from the National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR), 40 from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and 10 from the Forest Protection Brigade.
