Bacalar, Q.R. — Bacalar has recorded the first forest fire of the season. On Thursday evening, the fire was reported in the municipality around 7:00 p.m. It was located 10 kilometers southwest of the town of El Suspiro, but since it was night, firefighters were forced to wait until morning.
A total of 75 brigades headed to the site at 7:00 a.m. Friday, making their way through dense forest that made access difficult by land. They eventually met the flames, which officials clarified, did not pose any risk to localities.
The State Civil Protection Coordination (Coeproc) reported forest fire fighters from the State Fire Management Group made up of the National Forestry Commission, the State Civil Protection Coordination, the Environment Secretariat and the National Commission for Natural Protected Areas, battled flames.
While the cause of the fire remains undetermined, Alfredo Suárez of Civil Protection said “it is essential that people take preventive measures to avoid fires, including not throwing lit matches or cigarettes on the road, or not throwing out garbage, since bottles or glass can start a fire by creating a magnifying glass effect with the sun’s rays.”
