Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Mass plumes of black smoke could be seen for kilometers by motorists outside Playa del Carmen Wednesday after an intentionally set fire became out of control.
The Wednesday morning fire was reported at a car corral along the Playa del Carmen-Tulum highway. Workers cleaning the area set a pile of dried vegetation on fire to burn during the night, however, strong wind gusts flamed the smoulder which eventually spread.
Elements of the H. Solidaridad Fire Department attending to the report near Tres Rios arrived to find small buildings, vehicles and motorcycles burning. Black smoke shot high into the air as tires and fluids burned.
Firemen were successful in putting out the fire. Injuries were not reported.
On Monday night, an intentionally set fire outside Cancun also spread after a resident of La Unión on the outskirts of the city tried to burn garbage.
