Costa Maya, Q.R. — A forest fire in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve that started earlier this week, has been fully extinguished. Civil Protection, along with elements from the Tulum fire department, fought the blaze before it consumed any more than the 1.5 hectares already burned.
Fire fighters created a three-meter guard line to prevent spreading while they battled flames. Two water units were brought in.
The fire began the evening of May 18, 10 kilometers from the town of Punta Allen. Forest fire fighters from Civil Protection, the fire department and the National Commission of Natural Areas made efforts to quell flames due to the extremely dryness of the region.
The year before, the reserve was heavily damaged by ongoing forest fires, the last of which consumed more than 1,800 hectares.
