Playa del Carmen, Q. R. — Civil Protection says a female crocodile has been successfully removed and relocated from a Playa del Carmen beach. The reptile, which was reported to authorities by beachgoers, was spotted in shallow waters at Playa el Recodo in the city’s center.
Lifeguards were on hand Friday to help with the capture and removal of the reptile. It was around 1:00 p.m. when city authorities were notified of the sunbathing croc.
When officials arrived, they found the female in a shallow water area where she was captured. Leticia Hernández Barajas, the operational director of the Ministry of Civil Protection, reported that the reptile was later released in the mangroves of Punta Esmeralda.
He says that the recent heavy rains could be responsible for the sudden sighting of crocodiles.
On Friday in Cancun, a child was grabbed by a crocodile in the Cancun Hotel Zone lagoon area. The incident happened around 10:00 p.m. when they child crossed into a forbidden area to play. He was taken to hospital where he had surgery on the calf of his leg.
