Cayos Ahogados, Belize — A team from the Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute responded to reports of a dead whale off the coast of Belize City near Cayos Ahogados.
Officials from the research institute arrived to find a deceased Baleen Whale they reported, was approximately 18 meters long.
Although these whales are known to enjoy coastal waters, entering the shallow waters near Belize City is rare, said one researcher. Jamal Galves from the Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute said “these whales enjoy coastal waters, but getting to the shallow waters of Belize City is strange. Something was wrong with that whale.”
The team that responded to the report continue to determine the whale’s cause of death.
Earlier this week, a Blue Whale was found washed up along a Oaxaca beach near Lagunas de Chacahua.
