Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Solidaridad Civil Protection are still investigating the gas explosion that killed one and left four serious. The five construction workers were rushed to Playa del Carmen hospital after an LP gas explostion at Mayakoba Rosewood Monday.
Three of the five workers injured in the afternoon blast were transferred in critical condition. One of those three listed as critical died early Tuesday.
Darwin Manuel Covarrubias Góngora, Civil Protection Coordinator of Zone 08 in the municipality of Solidaridad, says inspectors are still investigating the cause of the explosion.
He confirmed that of the four hospitalized men, one continues to be listed as critical while the others are in intensive care. He says the construction site where the explosion happened remains closed.

Covarrubias said so far, they have pegged a gas boiler as the exploding device. “There was a group of workers working in a boiler room when a spark ignited and the explosion occurred. Three Civil Protection ambulances were sent to the site from where we made the transfers (to hospital) and now we are monitoring the incident,” he said.
He says in this latest incident, they are reviewing internal Civil Protection programs. He says many accidents are due to companies not following internal programs or failing to perform facility maintenance to ensure proper functioning.
According to Covarrubias, the Solidaridad Fire Department is also involved in the investigation into the exact cause of the explosion.
