One dead four injured in Riviera Maya hotel construction site gas blast

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — UPDATED: One dead and four injured were reported in a hotel construction site gas blast Monday afternoon. Paramedics were requested at a Riviera Maya hotel where at least five workers were found with extensive burns.

The accident happened around 4:00 p.m. on Loba de Mar Street in a construction zone of the hotel’s residential area located north of Playa del Carmen. The five burned workers were taken by ambulance to an IMSS PDC hospital.

Elements from Civil Protection, Risk Prevention and Firefighters were at the scene in Mayakoba carrying out a verification report of an LP gas explosion when they found the five injured men.

Five workers were injured in the Monday afternoon gas blast.

A police source confirmed the injured are workers. Paramedics transferred all five to hospital, three of whom are reported to be critical due to second and third-degree burns.

The area was cordoned off while authorities investigate the cause of the explosion.

UPDATE: On Tuesday morning, one of the men burned in the Monday afternoon blast died. Mena Alejo Bersain, one of the victims of the explosion of the gas explosion at the Rosewood Mayakoba hotel, died at IMSS 18 due to the severity of the burns he suffered.

Elements of the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) appeared at the hospital to carry out the corresponding procedures. According to early investigation information, the explosion was caused by a gas leak that sparked a flash.
