25 hectare Playa del Carmen forest fire 65 percent contained

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A 25 hectare forest fire in west Playa del Carmen is approximately 65 percent controlled. The fire, which is burning behind Villas del Sol, started last week.

On Friday, the Municipal Government of Solidaridad said authorities continue to work to put it out.

Jorge Oropeza, the Solidaridad Secretary of Civil Protection, Risk Prevention and Firefighters, said that the Ocelotes brigade, groups of volunteers and the Navy have eliminated 65 percent of the fire located at the end of Constituyentes Avenue.

He says the fire extends to the Tintal Road and that mostly at night, with the change of wind, the smoke reaches Villas del Sol homes.

He says machinery was brought in last week to create fire breaks to stop the spread.
