Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Municipal authorities have begun an investigation into allegations of illegal building on a Playa del Carmen beach. The illegal construction, which is being done by a hotel, was found on federal maritime (Zofemat) property.
Lourdes Várguez Ocampo, who heads Zofemat in the municipality of Solidaridad, said their report is being sent to the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) so that they carry out a verification and determine if the hotel has environmental impact authorization.
“Zofemat will notify Profepa for the corresponding verification visit and, if they have an impact resolution, they can continue, or if not, authorities will carry out the closure,” she said.
The hotel was reported to Zofemat Monday morning by a group of local residents who said the construction is illegal and obstructs free passage of the federal beach zone.
