Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A 42-year-old man from the state of Yucatan died by drowning Thursday off a central Playa del Carmen beach. The man was a visitor to the area.
He died by drowning after being swept out to sea by the strong currents and wind gusts that have dominated the region for several days. A nearby swimmer from Argentina saw the man in trouble and pulled him from the water.
He was returned to the 38th Street beach to where an ambulance was requested. While waiting for the ambulance, lifeguards applied CPR and were able to get a pulse, however, he died on the way to hospital.
He was at the beach with his family when the accident happened.
