Umán, Yucatan — An investigation into a man that was believed killed after being run over by a Maya Train has taken a turn. Early Thursday morning, Yucatan police were notified that a body had been found on the tracks.
The body was seen laying on a stretch of Tren Maya track outside the town of Poxilá in the municipality of Umán, Yucatan. At the time of police arrival, it was believed that the man died from being run over by a train.
However, on Thursday afternoon, Yucatan police identified the man as someone reported missing.
On December 17, the family of 86 year old Álvaro Peña Quintal reported him as missing from the municipality of Chocholá, an area near where his body was found on the train tracks Thursday morning.

After an investigation, Yucatan police are now looking into his death as a possible murder. According to obtained information, State Investigative Police (PEI) learned that Álvaro Peña Quintal, a well known businessman, had been abducted.
Witnesses reported seeing him being forced into a vehicle and driven off by a man and woman. That man and woman are belived to have robbed him of money he had on him at the time before physically assaulting him and leaving him on the train tracks.
Reports say the man and woman cut through a wire fence and dragged him onto the tracks where he was run over. Yucatan authorities have not made a public comment on what has become a possible murder investigation.
The PEI’s Homicide and Injury Department has taken over the case. An autopsy will determine the official cause and time of death.
