Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Municipal police detained a subject who is allegedly responsible for shooting two state police officers Saturday. The shooting of the officers happened Saturday night in the Centro neighborhood of Playa del Carmen just before 11:00 p.m. as they sat in their unit.
According to preliminary information, 25-year-old Sergio N from Quintana Roo was captured on attempted murder charges against two state police agents, one of whom has since died.
The young man is accused of opening fire against the agents while they were sitting in their patrol unit on 15th Avenue in the city’s center. After the shooting and repelling fire, municipal police began a search operation to locate those responsible.
They reported locating Sergio N after about 30 minutes of searching. He was found laying on a street near the Villas Riviera subdivision with a gunshot wound to his buttocks and leg. The man was arrested and taken to the General Hospital for medical attention.
Later that night, authorities reported the death of one of the two officers hit inside the patrol unit. Officer Luis Enrique N died in hospital after being hit in the head. The second officer, René N remains in critical condition after being shot in the neck.
