Cancun, Q.R. — WestJet flights into Cancun International are slowly resuming normal operations after a tentative deal was reached. On July 30, WestJet responded to CUPE’s 72-hour strike notice at which time they issued a lockout notification to maintain operational control.
In a statement Monday, WestJet confirmed “WestJet and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) reached a tentative agreement, bringing an end to operational disruption.
“We want to commend the bargaining teams on both sides for their commitment, hard work, and professionalism in negotiating an agreement that will be transformative for our cabin crew and our industry.
“CUPE will now put forward the agreement for a ratification vote by WestJet cabin crew.”
On Monday alone, at least four flights from major Canadian cities into Cancun were canceled due to the strike. According to WestJet counter staff, flights from Toronto, Quebec and Calgary were cancelled Monday.
Since July 30, at least a dozen flights have been affected by the striking Canadian Union of Public Employees.
In Terminal 4 Monday, one Canadian family trying to return home to Canada found out their flight from Cancun International had been canceled after arriving at the airport.
“We were supposed to catch a flight to Quebec at 2:35 this afternoon. We arrived on time only to receive the frustrating news that the flight had been canceled,” said Mr. Herve adding, “my wife and I are trying to figure out how we’re going to return to Canada.”
The CUPE strike was the April 2026 result of a dispute with the Minister of Labour. WestJet has since reported that as of August 3, 2026, they have reached a tentative agreement with Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) that will end the operational disruptions.
The airline has also said that guests travelling between July 30 to August 6, 2026 can make a one-time change or cancellation to their flight at no additional cost. Changes must be made more than two hours before flight departure time.
