Welding spark likely cause of fire that left Bacalar hotel in ruins

Bacalar, Q.R. — A large fire Saturday has left considerable damage to a Bacalar hotel. The grass top of the hotel was completely burned away and one car destroyed in the afternoon blaze.

March 7, 2026.

The was reported at a hotel on Costera Avenue at 36th Street. Staff and area residents tried to put the fire out themselves, however, the fire quickly spread through the palm-thatched structures.

Following the report, firefighters along with personnel from the National Emergency Commission arrived at the scene and coordinated efforts to extinguish flames. Authorities also worked to stop the fire from spreading to nearby properties.

Despite the extensive material damage, authorities reported no injuries. Civil Protection are still assessing the situation, however, early information says the fire was started by a spark.

The hotel was undergoing metal work inside the building at the time of the fire. It is believed a welding spark caught the dry rooftop grass above the workers on fire.
