Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A weekend call for volunteers to help battle the municipality’s forest fires proved helpful, reported mayor Lili Campos. Campos says the volunteers joined the four brigades who worked 12-hour shifts covering two kilometers per day on foot.
Locals who volunteered to help fight municipal fires joined teams made up of Civil Protection, Conafor (the National Forestry Commission of Mexico) and elements of the army, all of whom, are trained.
“It really is a very pleasant response from the citizens who participate voluntarily,” Campos said after participating in a flyover earlier in the week to see the damage herself.
Campos did not provide numbers as to how many people signed up to help.
