Unattended candle blamed for afternoon PDC apartment fire

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Solidaridad firemen were sent to a Mayakoba apartment Tuesday afternoon after reports of thick smoke. They arrived after neighbors reported seeing smoke coming from a third floor unit shortly before 3:30 p.m.

An unattended candle caught a mattress on fire.

Although firemen arrived from the fire department with a unit, they were able to put out the fire using only extinguishers. Once inside, firefighters attended to a burning mattress, which generated the smoke seen outside the unit.

According to early information, a lit candle that was left unattended caught the mattress on fire. The third floor apartment began to emit smoke once the candle flames spread.

Firemen did not report any injures during the fire, only material damage.
