Mérida, Yucatan — Two exotic reptiles have been seized at the airport in Mérida after they were discovered being illegally shipped in transport boxes.
Elementos de la Guardia Nacional made the discovery of the two live reptiles that they report were being illegally shipped in cardboard boxes from the city of Monterrey in the state of Nuevo León.
In a statement, the National Guard say that the assurance occurred at a parcel company at the Aeropuerto Internacional Manuel Crescencio Rejón (Mérida International Airport) when carrying out inspections of the parcel hangar. There, they came across two transparent plastic containers. Each container had one reptile, a Gecko Albino, that was found in a dehydration state, without food and without documentation.
They proceeded to inform personnel of the la Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Ambiente (Profepa), who came to rescue the reptiles and carry out the following corresponding procedures.
