Costa Maya, Q.R. — A car traveling toward Mahahual caught fire on the Costa Maya highway Monday. The driver of the vehicle, a gray Jetta, was heading toward the seaside town of Mahahual when a thick cloud of smoke became visible.
The car quickly became fully engulfed moments after pulling over. Both the driver and his passenger got out of the vehicle before it burst into flames. Members of Fire Department of the Othón P. Blanco Municipality arrived and began efforts to contain the fire.
Extinguishing efforts lasted several minutes as the flames quickly consumed the interior of the vehicle. Once the fire was under control, firefighters cooled it to prevent it from reigniting. The unit was considered a total loss.
