Tossed cigarette butt likely cause of PDC roadside fire

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Playa del Carmen firemen spent more than an hour at a roadside weed fire Wednesday. The grass fire at the end of Juárez Avenue was reported by area residents at around 2:00 p.m.

Approximately 20 square meters of extremely dry vegetation quickly burned. The roadside fire started directly under a set of CFE power lines. Firemen were successful in extinguishing the burning grass and preventing it from spreading further.

There was no power line damage reported. Authorities speculate the highway grass fire was started by a tossed cigarette butt.
