Matehuala, San Luis Potosi — Intense rain in the city of Matehuala turned streets into rapidly flowing rivers that stranded both drivers and pedestrians.
Civil Protection of San Luis Potosí reports that an intense thunderstorm hit the region Friday evening, leaving several communities flooded after the heavy rains began to fall. State police were out attempting to free trapped divers from vehicles that became overwhelmed by the large amounts of water.
Nearly 50 vehicles were affected by the intense rains as they flowed down city streets that had turned into deadly rivers. Several city intersections became clogged with a collection of vehicles that were swept away by the heavy rains.
San Luis Potosi Civil Protection says the thunderstorm hit around 7:00 p.m., creating a sudden surge of water that affected the streets of Guerrero, Insurgentes, Regules, Matamoros, Juárez and Hidalgo, dragging vehicles in its path.
Officials have not reported any deaths, however, state personnel along with Municipal Civil Protection, firefighters and other public security units continue to make tours of the city.
