Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — National Guard Highways were at the scene of a three vehicle accident early Sunday morning. A pickup truck, van and car were involved in the accident that left traffic slow going through the area.
The accident was reported by motorists traveling the Playa del Carmen – Puerto Morelos section of federal highway around 9:00 a.m. One lane was blocked by the pickup truck. At least three people involved in the accident stood along the road while they waited for authorities.
A white pickup truck was left completely demolished in a highway lane, while a black private car was run off the road and onto the central median. Off to the side was a public transport van.
The van was also run off the highway. It came to a stop after slamming into an electrical pole. Damage to the public transport van was extensive. It is not known if there were any serious injuries.
Firemen were called to the scene to use the jaws of life to remove the driver, who was found trapped behind the wheel of his white pickup. Traffic was affected for more than two hours while authorities cleared the area. Speed and recent wet roads due to the passing of Tropical Storm Sara are being factored into the cause.
