Three missing Costa Maya fishermen found alive

Xcalak, Q.R. — Three fishermen who went missing Monday have been found alive. The trio were discovered on land by a crew of area fishermen.

Adrián Martínez Ortega of la Coordinación Estatal de Protección Civil confirmed the men were found between Cayo Centro and Cayo Lobo of the Reserva de la Biosfera of Banco Chinchorro. The three men, who are between the ages of 20 and 25, said they made it to land after being dragged by the strong currents generated by the recent cold front.

They were transported to Mahahual where they were medically evaluated and found to be in good overall health, suffering from symptoms of dehydration and heat stroke.

The three young fishermen were reported missing Monday when they failed to arrive at their destination. They set out fishing in their vessel Maria Elodia. Family members were notified of their rescue around 1:40 p.m. Thursday.
