Bacalar, Q.R. — Three kayakers on a section of the Bacalar Lagoon were assisted by the Marina Tuesday. The three found themselves in trouble after strong winds continually pushed them further out into the lagoon.
Personnel from the 17th Naval Zone of Chetumal came upon the trio and their kayak during a maritime patrol. The Secretary of the Navy reported coming upon the three Mexican citizens approximately one nautical mile from the Balneario Ejidal de Bacalar.
“Naval personnel carrying out maritime patrol in a MAKO-type vessel from the Chetumal Harbor Master’s Office located the three individuals on Isla de los Pájaros, within the Bacalar Lagoon,” they reported.
“They had gone out on a kayak and found themselves in difficulties due to the strong wind and waves in the area. Naval personnel provided assistance to the three people and their kayak. They were confirmed to be in good health and were transferred to a hotel dock in Bacalar where they are safely housed.”
The Yucatan Peninsula was hit by strong winds Monday that caused navigation to be closed along the coast. While winds dies down late Monday late, strong gusts were felt again most of Tuesday. The gusts are part of a passing cold front.
