Three dead 20 injured in accident that left bus rolled in highway shoulder

Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — Three people were killed early Wednesday morning in a accident that left nearly two dozen others injured. Emergency services were on scene along the federal highway near the Tulum airport where a staff bus overturned around 6:00 a.m.

Reports say 20 were injured, three seriously October 7, 2026.

The Riviera Maya hotel staff bus was transporting employees to work early Wednesday when the bus overturned. The driver had left Felipe Carrillo Puerto, stopping to pick up employees from the communities of X-Hazil Sur, Señor, and Tuzik, among others as it headed for the hotel.

As the bus neared the Tulum airport, however, the driver swerved for reasons unknown and the bus overturned in the highway shoulder. Three people were found trapped under the bus and pronounced dead at the scene.

Early reports say another 20 people from inside the bus were injured, three seriously. Five ambulances were on scene to attend to the wounded. Four of the injured were taken to hospital in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, while the rest were transferred to Tulum.

The accident happened less than two kilometers from the airport. The driver of the bus was taken to hospital by a coworker where he was interviewed by police.

The bus was transporting Riviera Maya hotel employees at the time of the accident October 7, 2026.

Emergency personnel attending the scene did not disclose a possible cause for the accident. An investigation into exactly what happened remains underway.
