Three arrested for extorting Playa del Carmen businesses

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Three subjects accused of the crime of extorting businesses along Fifth Avenue in Playa del Carmen have been taken into custody by la Fiscalía General del Estado de Quintana Roo.

The trio were captured after a victim complaint was made via the prosecutor’s newly implemented WhatsApp (984 100 92 62) number to deal more quickly with extortion complaints.

The complaint led authorities in the right direction, which led to the arrest of three male subjects. The three have been identified as Ricardo N, Alberto N and Adrián N. In a press release, prosecutor Óscar Montes de Oca said that according to their initial investigation, the three have demanded floor right payments on at least two other occasions, demanding payments of between 20,000 and 30,000 peso.

Montes de Oca reported at the time of their arrest, Ricardo N was found in possession of a mobile phone that was assigned to the number where he reported successful extortions. Police also found nine bags of marijuana on his person, while the other two were each found carrying five bags.

The trio were made available to the Public Ministry to face drug charges as well as charges of extortion.
