Territorial dispute leads to arrest of gang members on Holbox island

Holbox, Q.R. — Authorities say a weekend attack that took place on the island of Holbox did not involve the island’s military base. The attack took place between criminal gang members who were fighting over territory.

The armed attack happened early Sunday near the area known as La Caleta on Holbox Island. Reports of the eruption of gunfire triggered a large-scale mobilization of security forces.

Although initial reports suggested the attack involved the military’s operations base, ministerial and public security authorities denied this version of events.

Preliminary investigations confirmed that the incident was a dispute between members of the same criminal cell dedicated to drug dealing. The shootout between gang members was territorial.

Area residents in the vicinity of La Caleta and Punta Cocos reported hearing the shots of gunfire to police. Authorities arrived and began an operation that included temporarily closing public roads near the scene.

As a result of the operation, three people were arrested, all of whom were injured during the confrontation. One individual was apprehended while attempting to flee the scene.

Three people were arrested during the search operation June 2026.

During the search, authorities seized two handguns. Additional information surrounding the operation has not been provided.
