Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A teen driver was arrested from the scene of a two vehicle crash in Playa del Carmen Wednesday night. The young man of around 17 appeared to be intoxicated as he stood handcuffed beside police on the side of the road.

Residents reported the crash between the car and an SUV on Solidaridad Avenue near the Real Amalfi neighborhood around midnight. At the scene, police found two heavily damaged vehicles, one of which was transporting members of a children’s baseball team.

The head on crash sent at least three people from inside the SUV to hospital. Initial reports indicate that children were among the injured, although authorities have not confirmed the severity of their injuries.

According to witnesses, the driver of the car was speeding and veered into the oncoming lane, slamming head-on into the SUV. At the time of the crash, beer cans were found littering the street outside the car.

Municipal police arrested the young driver from the scene. He was handcuffed and displayed trouble maintaining a standing position while an ambulance transferred the injured to hospital and tow trucks removed the damaged vehicles.

The teen driver was taken to a holding cell from where he was handed over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
