Teen arrested from PDC murder scene in death of stepfather

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A teenage boy and his mother were taken into police custody Sunday from the scene of a murder. Both were removed from the Coba Street home after police found the boy’s stepfather dead.

The unnamed man was found laying dead at a set of entrance gates into the private community of Paseso de Xcacel Sunday afternoon. He had walked to the security booth for help after allegedly being stabbed by his teenage stepson.

Police were called to the home around 4:00 p.m. in response to domestic violence reports that lead to the stabbing. At the scene, police learned that the teenager had stabbed his stepfather in an attempt to protect his mother who was being physically assaulted.

Neighbors reported to police that the man was stabbed during a struggle with his stepson inside the second floor apartment. The struggle lead outside to the balcony from where the stabbed man fell to the ground.

He then began walking toward the security booth for help where he collapsed. According to the initial police report, security personnel inside the booth also called 9-1-1, reporting a person injured by a knife. Red Cross paramedics pronounced the stabbed man dead at the entrance.

The wife of the now deceased, who also called for help, told police that she had had a heated argument with her partner which escalated into physical violence. It was then that her youngest son, apparently attempting to protect her, intervened and attacked the man.

Officers from the Specialized Group for Attention to Domestic and Gender Violence (GEAVIG) were brought in to assist the mother and teenage boy.

One resident who requested anonymity said that domestic violence was constant at the home. “We had reported it several times but nothing ever happened. The woman lived in fear,” she said.

An autopsy will determine if the man died from the stab wound or the fall from the second story balcony.
